Our Kaupapa
New Zealand Poetry Slam was founded in 2011 by Michael Rudd and Michelle Bolton. The first National Poetry Slam Finals were held in October of 2011 with poets representing Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. In 2012, the winner of the finals Ali Jacs, was flown to Australia to feature at the Australian Poetry Slam Finals and the top three winners were flown to Australia to compete at the first Trans-Tasman Slam in early 2013.
Dedicated to furthering awareness and appreciation of poetry and live performance, the NZ Poetry Slam organises, promotes, and executes a yearly National Poetry Slam to crown New Zealand's top performance poet, although everyone agrees you can't judge art with numbers. After six consecutive years, we have representatives currently from seven different cities around the country and we are always looking for new communities to be represented. The NZ National Poetry Slam Finals are hosted once a year at the beginning of November.
