There are plenty of spoken word events happening around New Zealand. Sometimes a slam, sometimes an Open Mic, sometimes a special performance from national and internationl performers. If you have any suggestions not listed here, or want to start your own event, please drop us a line.

Going West Slam - Auckland

​Going West Books & Writers Festival 2016 is an annual literary festival that takes place in West Auckland. In the last few years they have run a popular slam with cash prizes and notable slammers.

Auckland University Slam - Auckland

​"Join us for the annual Poetry Slam competition on campus. We have international guest judges, awesome prizes for the top three competitors as well as free pizza and a cash bar on the night, all tied together with amazing student talent and spoken word performances."
The University of Auckland run an annual Slam for their students, heats and the final are open to students and the wider public. For more information check out their info page here or follow them on facebook.

Matariki Poetry Slam - Wellington

Over the last few years Te Papa has held a one-off poetry slam as part of their Matariki festival.

WOMAD Poetry Slam

In 2017 WOMAD ran their first ever poetry slam. It was won by previous New Zealand Slam Champion Ali Jacs.

Poetry Live is New Zealand's longest open mic. They have guest features, music, and a welcoming vibe every Tuesday at 8pm.

​Octagon Collective / Dog with Two Tails Poetry Readings - Dunedin

The Octagon Collective is a loose affiliation of Dunedin poets who organise monthly readings at the Dog with Two Tails Cafe, Moray Place, Dunedin. Penultimate Tuesdays every month from February to November. 8 pm start 10 pm finish. Free entry, wide variety of published and freshly hatched poets. Wholesome, delicious, good value food from the generous cafe hosts.

WORD Christchurch

WORD Christchurch presents a huge variety of literary events, from our biennial Writers & Readers Festival – the largest literary event in the South Island – to one-off events with visiting and local authors. In May each year we partner with the Auckland Writers Festival for an Autumn Season, and in August and September on the festival off-year we partner with the Christchurch Arts Festival for a series of ideas-based events.
